Houdini's first successful trick, however, wasn't escapology - it was the needle trick. He would swallow several needles and a length of thread, and then regurgitate them with the needles all threaded. The Needle Trick, a grisly effect involving the swallowing of dozens of needles and thread, then the regurgitation of the thread with all the needles neatly threaded on, would be a cornerstone of his act throughout his life.
[Theater review, Portland Evening Express - Thursday, June 11, 1908]
The public in general and physicians in particular are invited to come upon the stage and examine Houdini's mouth mouth closely and observe that there is nothing concealed in his mouth to aid him in the trick and make sure that he swallowed the needles and thread. The consummation of the stunt provides the wonder of it when Houdini draws forth the 10 yards (of thread) with the 50 needles all threaded.
It is one of the best things he does and is sure to please the immense crowds who are attending Keith's this week to see the handcuff king and wonder worker.
